More about colour...
"Let there be light: and there was light" We are so used to living in a world full of colour - brighter, more intense, more available colour than at any time previously in history - that we tend to take colour for granted. However, if we are unexpectedly deprived of colour, for whatever reason, we try to compensate - we crave colour. Hostages, held for long periods in semi-darkness or darkness often speak of their longing and need to experience colour whilst in captivity. Many start to "see" colours in the darkness.
Researchers around the world have only REDISCOVERED the importance of light and colour to the Human Animal (and, for that matter to all living creatures and plants) in fairly recent history. A study of The History of Medicine reveals the knowledge of the ancients, our ancestors, and shows how the effect of colour was both recognised and utilized by, for example, the Egyptians in 300 BC. They used colour in healing temples, as well as using coloured crystals and precious gems for the healing properties of colour contained within each coloured crystal. The importance of the sun's rays and white light was also recognised.
Great advances in medical knowledge, made by the Greeks, took Egyptian
medical beliefs a stage further.
Four types of "colour"
Much of the knowledge of colour and its importance to health was lost (or
driven underground to become "secret" knowledge) in the Dark Ages.
In the last 150 years much ground-breaking research has been completed into colour and its effects. The American, Edwin Babbit, identified some of the properties of each colour and the effect of particular colours on his patients in the 1870s and 1880s. He used coloured filters and solarized water - with some remarkable results - when treating his patients. Rudolph Steiner studied, amongst other things, colour and form. He applied his findings to education. His first school was built in Stuttgart and he applied his findings - using certain colours in classrooms - to aid effective learning. Much research and work has been done by Theophilus Gimbel, Britain's most experienced Colour Researcher and Practitioner, over the last 35 years. He has explored the healing power of colour and its spirituality, the connection of colour from the past, into the present - and onwards!
